NETFLIX & MCDONALD'S. PORTALS.

APP

The premiere of the latest season of Stranger Things on Netflix was accompanied by “Portals”, a special activation that allowed users to locate interdimensional gateways to the Upside Down spread all over the country: streets, shopping malls, restaurants…

Users had to close these portals to win prizes and help keep the specially designed McDonald’s menu in restaurants for longer. How? By reaching a portal and scanning its unique QR code.

But beware: some portals were public, while others could only be found on the map by entering a key broadcast on WSQK Radio, accessible exclusively through the site.

A 100% mobile activation designed and developed together with CyW agency, with clear objectives: maximizing awareness of the season premiere, boosting downloads of the McDonald’s app, and increasing foot traffic to its restaurants.

Mission accomplished!

Development:

The main technological challenge of the project was to design and deploy a comprehensive platform capable of centralizing the creation, management, and operation of a large-scale digital campaign.

The campaign was built around a proprietary CMS that enabled the dynamic configuration of the different portals, the management of radio secret words, the real-time definition of their broadcast schedule, as well as the registration, assignment, and tracking of prizes and participants.

All of this was seamlessly integrated with the McDonald’s mobile app, combining embedded web experiences, offer activation, secure user flows, and a scalable cloud architecture. This ensured a smooth, monitored, high-performance experience both for end users and for the campaign’s operational teams.
